The next day we visited the Grand Canyon, where the squirrels are definitely not afraid of you. One refused to leave us alone and I'm pretty sure would have run over our laps to our lunch if we hadn't stomped around and ran after it to scare it off. Multiple times. Here's one with his eye on our hummus:
Then we drove through Monument Valley on our way to Moab, UT! Moab is one of my most favorite places ever. I'm so glad we were able to make it up there on this trip.
The next day we went to Arches National Park and hiked around a bit. It was Pascal's first time there!
That afternoon we drove to Gallup, NM to visit Kristin! It was great to see her again. We went out for Mexican food and watched the movie French Kiss (such a good movie!). The next day we drove to Wichita Falls, TX via Amarillo and marveled at the vastness of the flat, treeless plains. Earlier this summer we both read the book Empire of the Summer Moon, a fantastic book about the rise and fall of the Comanche tribe. The Comanches dominated western Texas and the panhandle, and the book gave us an appreciation for the landscape we were driving though. On the way we stopped by Cadillac Ranch...
and encountered the record-setting Texas heat. That's right, your eyes do not deceive you!
That's 104 at 8:36 pm! After sunset!
Just in case you think there's something wrong with my car's thermometer, here's a shot of the temperature and time displayed by the local high school. It's blurry, but it says 8:36 pm, 105 degrees. Whew!
The next day we drove to my parent's house in Houston in time for dinner with my family.
It's so good to be back!

no way we are only three hours from there. Wish we'd known. We are planning a trip there this fall...maybe we could have gone a bit early!
